King’s abdication prompts Greens to seek candidate for Croydon West – Inside Croydon

Just days before the deadline for candidate declarations for the July 4 general election, Croydon’s Green Party has been forced into a last-minute scramble to find a replacement for Marley King in Croydon West.

Sources suggest Croydon Greens held emergency meetings yesterday, with a selection meeting to be held tomorrow night. “Our members in Croydon can choose our party’s candidates,” a source pointedly said.

Changed circumstances: Marley King

King, a mother of children with complex social needs, announced her decision this afternoon on social media.

“I have taken the difficult decision to stand down as Green candidate for Croydon West,” King tweeted. “It’s not a decision I’ve taken lightly, it’s an honor to represent my community, I love Croydon, it’s always been my home, it’s where I choose to live and raise my children.

“Because of the love for my children I decided to give up being a candidate. We are at very important transitions in their lives where they need my full attention, support and love,” King wrote.

“I continue to fully support the aims and principles of the Green Party and look forward to supporting the Croydon Green Party again in the future.”

Parental Priorities: Today’s King’s Announcement

King, previously worked for the NHS as a social prescriber and is also trained as a mental health first aider. She was announced as the Greens candidate for parliament last October.

Croydon West is among the new constituencies in the borough following a boundary review and includes parts of the former Croydon Central and Croydon South constituencies, which is tipped as a safe Labor seat.

The Labor candidate is Sarah Jones, who has been the Labor MP for Croydon Central since 2017.

The Conservatives have chosen Chris Philp’s office assistant Simon Fox, a councilor in the Waddon ward, as their candidate, while the LibDem candidate is Jahir Hussain.
