Wigan Warriors have paid tribute to rugby legend Rob Burrow, who has died after a long battle with MND.

The 41-year-old played his entire career for Leeds Rhinos and, after retiring in 2017, announced he had been diagnosed with the disease.

Paying tribute to him, the Warriors described his and his families’ “extreme courage, strength, tenacity and determination” in fighting MND and say he will be sadly missed.

The club also recalled the moments when the tenacious fly-half hit out at them:

“It’s difficult to single out a highlight of Burrow’s career playing against Wigan over the years, but I suspect two games probably stand out more than most…

“Game 1 – 18 June 2005 at Headingley when Leeds inflicted what is still Wigan’s heaviest league defeat by 70 points to nil, Burrow scoring two tries and a goal.

“Match 2 – 10 October 2015 at Old Trafford, where Leeds cruised to a 22-20 Grand Final victory.”

As an opponent, the Warriors say Burrows was “always feared” and always gave 100 percent.

“Rob Burrow will be greatly missed as a rugby player and by the Rugby League community, but he leaves his legacy as an ambassador for the MND.

“As we pay tribute to Rob, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, especially his wife, Lindsey, who was by Rob’s side throughout, and also to his three children, Macy, Maya and Jackson”.

Burrow spent his entire rugby league career with Leeds Rhinos and helped them win eight Super League titles.

After his diagnosis, he raised millions to help build a new care center for MND patients alongside former teammate Kevin Sinfield.
