24 stunning photos from the Queen Anne celebrations at the Pier Head

Thousands of people turned out at the Pier Head today for the naming ceremony of Cunard’s Queen Anne in a magnificent musical celebration of the city and its maritime heritage.

Having recently made her maiden voyage, Queen Anne arrived in Liverpool this morning for the naming ceremony – a moment marked by the traditional smashing of a bottle of champagne against the 249th vessel to bear the Cunard name.

People waited for hours along the Pier Head to watch the entertainment put on to celebrate the ceremony. A festive day saw performances by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and opera superstar Andrea Bocelli.

The formal proceedings of the ceremony ended with a stunning performance by Bocelli, including his iconic song “Time to Say Goodbye”. The crowd fell silent as they watched before breaking into a minute-long applause.

Local performers kept the waterfront crowds entertained for hours after the tenor left the stage. From 8.30pm the evening’s festivities begin with another performance from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic transporting visitors to a world of funk and soul as legendary Liverpudlian TV personality and DJ Craig Charles joins the orchestra on stage .

Craig kept the party going and everyone on their feet until the grand finale. Queen Ana left around 10:15 p.m. Then there was a fireworks finale for guests ashore and on board.

This is a selection of our favorite images from a day that will live long in our memories.
