Tributes have been paid to a Year 8 pupil at a Bristol secondary school who died following a half-term accident.

Following the May 28 accident, parents and students at Redland Green School were informed of the tragic death of Rufus Pomeroy on May 31.

Redland Green School headteacher Ben Houghton described Rufus Pomeroy as a “lovely” and “valued” member of the school community.

On Monday 3rd June, staff and students returned to start the second half of term after the short break. The school said support measures were put in place by Bristol City Council’s educational psychology and schools welfare teams.

In a letter to parents informing them of Mr Pomeroy’s death, Mr Houghton asked pupils not to discuss the accident on social media.

Mr Houghton wrote: “I understand it is unusual for you to receive a message from me during the school holidays but I have some tragic news to share with you. It is with great sadness that one of our Year 8 students passed away following an accident on Tuesday 28th May.

“Given the impact this news will have on our community, I wanted to make sure you were informed as soon as possible, even during the half term break. This will also give you the opportunity to talk to your child before the new term.”

“We recognize that our students will react in different ways to this terrible news and support will be available to all who may be particularly affected.”

Mr Houghton also outlined one of the measures that would be put in place to help students. He explained: “For the foreseeable future, they will be made available to any student who needs a calm and quiet space to work.

“Students will receive this news first thing in the morning during the mentor program with immediate support provided.”

Speaking to Bristol Live, Mr Houghton said the community was “deeply saddened to be told” that Rufus Pomeroy had died.

He added: “I would like to express our sincere thoughts and condolences to Rufus’ family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We are devastated by the loss of such a lovely and valued member of our school community.”
