Joe Crann comments on Di’Shon Bernard’s future at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Di’Shon Bernard faces an uncertain summer.

Di’Shon Bernard, 23, sees his Sheffield Wednesday contract expire at the end of this month following an impressive debut season at Hillsborough.

The former Manchester United centre-back has become a household name among fans following his strong defensive performances.

He played 34 times in the Championship, showing his qualities as an athletic defender who can win battles on the ground and in the air.

Bernard finished the season with Sheffield Wednesday’s second-most tackles-per-game (3, behind Michael Ihiekwe on 4) and fourth-most tackles-per-game ( 1.5), according to Sofascore.

Fans are desperate to see Bernard sign a new contract with an offer on the table, according to the club’s retained list which was published in May.

But Bernard could very well technically become a free agent while away on international duty with Jamaica this summer.

Joe Crann on Di’Shon Bernard’s future at Sheffield Wednesday

Posting on X, Crann discussed Bernard’s future in S6, revealing that the quarterback could technical become a free agent while away on international duty.

Jamaica are playing in the Copa America this summer, with the Reggae Boys playing their first group game against Mexico on June 23.

But by the time Jamaica plays its third group game against Venezuela on July 1, Bernard could be a free agent.

Crann adds that “we hope Wednesday can make sure that’s not the case.”

The problem facing Sheffield Wednesday with Di’Shon Bernard

Sheffield Wednesday have long wanted to keep Bernard beyond this season; it was previously revealed that Danny Rohl was desperate to stay.

And whether Bernard wants to stay or not, him being away on international duty certainly makes things difficult for Sheffield Wednesday.

The club cannot expect him to commit his future to the club while playing in a major tournament. And at the same time, if he does technically become a free agent, he’s sure to be inundated with offers.

That is if it isn’t already; There have been previous reports of widespread interest in Bernard from the Championship and Europe, which will come as no surprise to Sheffield Wednesday fans.

He is still a young player and has shown his class on both the club and international stage in the 2023/24 campaign.

If Wednesday can keep him, and ideally on a long-term deal, they will not only retain a key player, but also have a very valuable asset in their ranks.

The Copa America certainly puts a spanner in the works, but there is still plenty of hope that Sheffield Wednesday can secure a new deal for Bernard this summer.
