Tributes have been paid to the ‘legendary’ Huddersfield teacher after he tragically lost his battle with cancer

Tributes have been paid to a much-loved Huddersfield teacher and school leader who has died aged 54.

Michelle Wood, who was assistant principal and classroom teacher at Marsden Junior School for 17 years, has died after a short battle with cancer, her family said. Mrs Wood, a former rugby player and junior coach with Slaithwaite Saracens in Huddersfield, was described by her school as a dedicated, kind and passionate educator and leader.

Jamie Stuttard, chief executive at Marsden Junior, told parents the devastating news in a letter on Sunday, describing Ms Wood as “an integral part of the school community and her dedication, passion and kindness touched the lives of many of the locals. area and beyond.”

He added: “Ms Wood faced her illness with strength and resilience and her positive spirit inspired everyone. He approached his responsibilities with unwavering commitment, always putting the welfare and education of the students above all else.

“She has been instrumental in many of Marsden Junior School’s successes, leaving a lasting impact that will be felt for years to come. As we mourn her loss, let us also remember the countless moments of joy, laughter, and shared accomplishments that Ms. Wood shared. brought into the life of the entire school community.

“He will be deeply missed by colleagues, friends, children and the local area. We understand that this news can be difficult for our children to process and we are here to offer support and guidance during this difficult time.”

The school said it would in time honor Ms Wood’s memory as a school community, adding: “Our thoughts are with Ms Wood’s family and loved ones at this time of grief. May they find happiness in the cherished memories and the impact she made. done on so many lives in Marsden and beyond.”

Ms Wood quit her job and took medical retirement in May. At the time, the school described her dedication to the Marsden community as “nothing short of legendary” and said “her competitive nature was contagious, not only in sporting events but also in her ability to instill in all children and the staff’s desire to succeed.”

The school said: “Ms Wood epitomized what a school leader should be.”

Ms Wood’s daughter Jessica Clow posted news of her mother’s death on social media and said: “It is with great sadness that we write to announce the passing of our beloved wife, daughter, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother, Michelle. .

“Mum passed away yesterday morning after a short battle with cancer. We are so proud of mom she always gives us the best memories! She was so special and impacted so many lives. She is and always will be a true Spartan warrior.”

Jessica said her mother played rugby for Slaithwaite Ladies and represented Great Britain in 2013 in New Zealand. He had also coached Slaithwaite Saracens junior teams for around 12 years.

The parents posted their own tributes on social media. One woman wrote: “Mrs Wood was an absolutely phenomenal teacher and had such a positive impact on the lives of so many children, including my two.”

On Sunday, the school’s PTA (Parent Teacher Association) said: “MJS PTA are totally saddened to hear this news today. Michelle was a true leader. A lady we all admired and loved and will be missed by all who knew her. . Rest in peace Michelle, thank you for creating memories for us xx.”
