Man found covered in ‘household chemicals’ as police cordon off Bristol park

A man has been detained under the Mental Health Act after he was found covered in household chemicals. Emergency services were called to Kings Square Park, off Dove Street in Bristol, last night, Monday June 3, with a large number of police officers, firefighters and paramedics at the scene.

A cordon was put in place and the public was urged to avoid the area as the emergency was dealt with. Avon and Somerset police officers wore protective clothing due to the unknown substance on the man and concerns it could be dangerous.




Officers were assisted by firefighters and paramedics to detain the man under the Mental Health Act. He is now in the care of mental health services.

Police thanked the public for their patience and assured people there was no ongoing risk following the incident. Officers will be patrolling the area over the coming days.

Avon and Somerset Police said: “Officers attended Kings Square Park off Dove Street in Bristol last night (Monday June 3) to deal with a welfare incident involving a man.

“They were required to wear protective clothing as a precaution due to an unknown substance on the man. Specialist officers were supported by Avon Fire and Rescue and South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) and were able to take the man into Mental custody. Health Act and to make the area safe.

“He is now in the care of mental health services. Inquiries were carried out to determine what the substance was and it was found to be household chemicals.”
