12 photos of a lost factory where people “from all over” came to work

Decades ago, workers from ‘all over’ Merseyside and beyond worked at a now-lost Merseyside factory that employed generations.

If you grew up in the Wirral or further afield, you may remember the Kelvinator factory once located on New Chester Road in Bromborough. The American appliance manufacturer, best known for making fridges, built its Merseyside site in the 1950s, where it remained for years.

Paul Peng, who lives in Claughton, worked at Kelvinator in the 1970s from when he was in his late teens and recently told the ECHO what life was like as an employee. He said: “The staff were really great. It was like a family business. Some people went there for three months and stayed there for three, four, five years and more.

“What was interesting was quite a few workers came from Crewe, I think the Crewe factory closed, so some of them were transferred to Bromborough at the Kelvinator. It had quite a family atmosphere and there were a lot of generations of family working there, they would tend to be there for long periods.

“I’d say two-thirds of Merseyside and some of that was from the Bromborough area. They came from all over.”

Certain generations will remember the factory, frequently seeing Kelvinator commercials or having its products in their own homes. It’s been years since Bromborough said goodbye to the Kelvinator, but it lives on in memories and photographs.

We recently dug through the archives to rediscover these 12 photos of the factory that have been unseen for years. Courtesy of our archive, Mirrorpix, you can see them in our gallery below.
