The latest Foreign Office advice warns against travel to Turkey, Mexico, Thailand and Egypt

The Foreign Office provides travel guidance to any of the 226 nations and territories in a bid to help people make informed decisions and stay safe.

Regular updates inform people of any entry or visa requirements, safety and security measures and risks, and weather warnings, and it can be extremely useful to have as much information as possible about the place you’re visiting.

If you travel to a destination that the FCDO warns against visiting, you could put yourself and other members of your party at risk, as well as void your travel insurance.

And the FCDO is currently warning against visiting parts of Turkey, Mexico, Thailand and Egypt. Here are the details for each in full:

Turkey

Millions of people travel to Turkey from the UK every year, and most of these trips are hassle-free. The FCDO advises against traveling to several parts of the country, although fortunately the resorts most popular with British tourists are considerably away from them.

According to the latest guidelines, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends:

• against all travel within 10 km of the Syrian border due to fighting and an increased risk of terrorism
• against all but essential travel into the city of Sirnak
• recommends against all but essential travel to Hakkari province

Mexico

Hundreds of thousands of trips to Mexico are made from the UK each year. According to the latest guidance, the State Department advises against all but essential travel to the following parts of Mexico:

• the city of Tijuana Other than transit through the Tijuana airport, the airport’s Cross Border Xpress bridge connecting the terminals across the Mexico-US border and Federal Toll Road 1D and Via Rápida through Tijuana to the border
• within 40 km of the border with Guatemala between the Pacific coast and including the border crossing at Gracias a Dio
• on Federal Highway 199 (Carretera Federal 199) between Rancho Nuevo (just outside San Cristobal de las Casas) and the Chancalá intersection just outside Palenque (where Federal Highway 199 meets Federal Highway 307)

• the state of Chihuahua Other than the city of Chihuahua, the Ciudad Juárez border crossing (accessed via federal toll road 45), federal toll road 45D connecting the cities of Chihuahua and Ciudad Juárez, the Copper Canyon rail route to and from Chihuahua, and cities immediately along this route, including Creel, the road from Creel through San Juanito to San Pedro, and State Highway 16 from San Pedro to Chihuahua
• the state of Colima, Other than the city of Manzanillo accessed by sea or air through the Manzanillo-Costalegre International Airport
• the areas southwest of road 45D in the state of Guanajuato
• State of Guerrero, Other than the city of Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa accessed by air
• in the areas of the state of Jalisco that are south and southwest of Lake Chapala to the border with the state of Colima and in the northern municipalities of Bolaños, Chimaltitán, Colotlán, Hostotipaquillo, Huejúcar, Huequilla el Alto, Mezquitic, San Martin de Bolaños, Santa Maria de los Ángeles, Totatiche and Villa Guerrero
• the state of Michoacán, Other than the city of Morelia accessed by federal toll roads 15D, 126 and 43; and Federal Toll Road 48D between Morelia City and General Francisco Mujica Airport, Pátzcuaro City accessed via Federal Toll Roads 14D and 15 from Morelia, and boat trips to the islands of Lake Pátzcuaro and Federal Highway 15D
• the state of Sinaloa, Other than the cities of Los Mochis and Mazatlán, Route 32 running between El Fuerte and Los Mochis. the 15D federal toll road that runs the length of the state. and the Copper Canyon Rail Trail to and from Los Mochis, El Fuerte, and towns immediately along that route
• the state of Tamaulipas, Other than the border crossing at Nuevo Laredo, accessed via federal toll road 85D from Monterrey, federal highways 80, 81, and 85 between Tampico, Ciudad de Victoria, and Magueyes, and the entire Tamaulipas area south of these highways
• the state of Zacatecas

Thailand

As with Turkey and Mexico, most of Thailand is considered safe for travel by the FCDO. However, due to “regular terrorist attacks”, travelers from the UK should avoid a number of provinces in the nation’s south.

All but essential travel is recommended for the following areas:

• Pattani province
• Yala Province
• Narathiwat province
• Southern Songkhla Province, excluding areas to the north and including the A43 road between Hat Yai and Sakom, areas northwest of the train line running between Hat Yai and Padang Besar, Hat Yai to Padang Besar (although people are advised) against all but essential travel on the train line itself)

Egypt

Much of Egypt is to be avoided, according to the latest FCDO advice, although popular resorts such as Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh are not included in the warning.

The Foreign Office currently advises against all travel within 20 km of the Egypt-Libya border, except for El Salloum, where “all but essential travel” is advised, and North Sinai Governorate.

“All but essential travel” is recommended for the following areas:

• the northern part of South Sinai governorate, beyond the St Catherine-Nuweibaa road, Other than coastal areas along the west and east of the peninsula
• Ismailiyah governorate east of the Suez Canal
• the western area of ​​the Nile Valley and Nile Delta regions, Other than Luxor, Qina, Aswan, Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings, Faiyum Governorate, coastal areas between the Nile Delta and Marsa Matruh, Marsa Matruh-Siwa Road, Siwa Oasis City, Giza Governorate northeast of the Bahariya Oasis, the road between Giza and Farafra, Bahariya Oasis, Farafra, White Desert and Black Desert
• the triangle Hala’ib and the trapezoid Bir Tawil
