Spud Man must move famous jacket potato patch after ‘sacked’ amid city redevelopment plans

Spud Man, the famous TikTok-jacketed potato seller, has told his legions of fans that he is being forced out of his beloved Tamworth town center venue due to upcoming council renovations. The much-loved stall, located in St Editha’s Square, has become a hot spot for foodies, attracting crowds from across the UK and even abroad, especially after a recent event offering free potatoes almost brought the town to a standstill.

However, with plans to refurbish and improve the market, Ben Newman, better known as Spud Man, will have to move later this year, although a new location has yet to be decided. The local council has assured that the move is only temporary and is actively seeking a solution that will benefit all involved.

In a heartfelt video message to his 3.5 million TikTok followers, Newman expressed his dismay: “Spud fans, I have very bad news. We are being kicked out by the council.”

He continued, sharing his affection for his current location: “I love this spot by the church on the square. Absolutely beautiful. And we leave. I knew it was coming because they are redeveloping the whole square. I didn’t do it. I realize it’s going to happen so soon.”

The video, which was captioned ‘I can’t believe I’m getting kicked out’ accompanied by a crying emoji, also highlighted the uncertainty faced by other providers: ‘Where are we going to go and what are we going to do? No I don’t know yet, and it’s not just me, but the whole market: the butcher, the lady of the bread, is moving so that she can tear everything and rush it.

A market trader is worried about the impact of plans to renovate and improve St Editha’s Market in Tamworth, saying it will disrupt his business.

The trader, who asked not to be named, said: “So it will be better in the long run and we will come back, but what do we do in the meantime? The only option they have given me so far is to put us. down on the high street a few traders and putting me there with our queue is probably not the best idea as I will probably upset most of the other traders.

“Initially I was hoping they would do it in half, but it seems they’re not, they want to do it all in one go.”

Stephen Gabriel, chief executive of Tamworth Borough Council, said: “Later this year, all market traders currently using St Editha’s Square are being temporarily relocated to other parts of the town while we redevelop and improve the market. Discussions are now taking place so that retailers can be prepared and communicate with their regular customers.”

“This work is part of our town center regeneration program where St Editha’s Square will become more accessible for all. The works also include improvements to lighting and seating areas.”

“All moves are temporary and we are working with our local market supplier to find everyone a suitable space elsewhere in Tamworth town center and market.
