Liverpool have released the player Birmingham City tried to sign in the transfer window

Mateusz Musialowski, the playmaker who was on Birmingham City’s radar in the January transfer window, is leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract, the Reds have confirmed.

Musialowski, who hails from Poland, was picked up by Liverpool scouts and added to their academy as a teenager in 2020. The striker was set to join Austrian side TSV Hartberg in the summer before the deal fell through at the last minute and he ended up staying put at Anfield.

The 20-year-old is keen on regular football but has always seemed a long way from securing a regular supply on Merseyside, where even his academy counterparts, such as Lewis Koumas and Jayden Danns, have been given opportunities ahead of him, not to mention the star. – the first equipped team.

Outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp allowed Musialowski a run-out; came on in the second half of the Europa League second leg against Sparta Prague, which the Reds won convincingly 11-2. Musialowski replaced fellow youngster Bobby Clark – son of former Blues boss Lee – with less than 20 minutes to play.

Klopp praised Musialowski and emphasized how much of a player he thinks of him when speaking after the win: “Mateusz is an exceptional talent, I really think he’s ready now.”

But that is the only first-team exposure Musialowski has had at Anfield, although he did score in three successive EFL Trophy appearances last season – in a win against Morecambe and defeats by Blackpool and Barrow. Now the youngster – previously nicknamed the ‘Polish Messi’ due to his style of play – is looking for his next challenge.
