What is Indie News Week?

In the words of Jonathan Heawood, executive director of the Public Interest News Foundation:

“Indie news providers are the unsung heroes of local communities across the UK, breaking stories and informing their audiences. Through Indie News Week, we want to thank the enterprising journalists and publishers who make up this sector and help them connect even more deeply with their communities.”

We’re part of a movement of indie news providers across the country using limited resources to create public interest news — ethical, unbiased journalism that informs and empowers the public about the things that matter to us all.

During Indie News Week, new small, independent publications like us will celebrate the work and activity of our sector. Check out hashtags like #indienewsweek to see the range of small publications across the country.

The tagline for this year’s India News Week is “No news is bad news.

When I started Dispatch in 2018 we knew that the newspaper industry was facing difficult times. Following the closure of Enfield Gazette and Advertiser in 2017, we wanted to make sure Enfield didn’t end up without local journalism.

Social Spider Community News, editors of Enfield Dispatch, I am a social enterprise. I never had wealthy backers or investors.

We were extremely grateful for the response to our Patron Appeal this year and all the contributions from you, our community, as supporters. We couldn’t keep doing what we do without you. James Cracknell, our editor, has written a lengthy piece exploring the joys and challenges of making news in increasingly difficult conditions.

We’re here to serve our community, and times have never been tougher for news organizations.

As big corporate local newspapers become less and less local, independent community news providers struggle to generate enough revenue to carry out their invaluable work, jeopardizing local democracy, civic engagement and community cohesion.
