Robison was talking about international duty when asked if he gets his own hotel room for tours, to which he replied: “Yes, I do. Even now at the club level, all the guys have their rooms because, believe it. or not, we’re all a little weird, we’ve got our quirks and all.

But the goalkeeper admitted that the players did not always have the luxury of having their own space to prepare for matches. He continued: “Years ago you were told to move on. My first roommate for Leeds was David Wetherall – the big midfielder. I mean he was a sensible captain.”

Wetherall’s playing career took off when he moved from his hometown club Sheffield Wednesday to Leeds in 1991, making 202 appearances for the club. Meanwhile, Robinson would come through the youth academy in 1998, playing a season with the veteran before Wetherall moved to Bradford City.

Speaking of one night in particular, Robinson continued: “I remember to this day – I went to Waltham Abbey and there was a little room with two single beds in it and he’s an experienced old player, maybe captain at the time – Obviously, I was told to take care of me. We had dinner downstairs at 7 o’clock, we wake up in the room and we said a little, “What do we do now?

“Arriving at 9 o’clock, he said, ‘Turn off the lights.’ I said “What do you mean turn off the lights?” He said ‘Turn off the lights, I’m going to sleep’, so I sat in bed next to him for about three hours wondering what to do.”

Reflecting on the importance of having personal space in today’s game, he added: “Obviously everyone goes to bed at different times and wakes up at different times, so it’s important for guys to have their own space to be honest “.

Robinson is a seasoned veteran of the game – amassing 421 appearances at club level for the likes of Tottenham, Blackburn Rovers and Burnley, as well as 41 caps for England before retiring in 2017.
