New League One bosses rate Michael Duff is aiming to lead Huddersfield’s revival

Huddersfield Town enter the League One campaign under new management following the appointment of Michael Duff as head coach.

The former Cheltenham Town, Barnsley and Swansea City boss was appointed by the Terriers last month, aged 46, signing a three-year deal to take the reins at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Duff replaced Andre Breitenreiter in the dugout, with the German choosing not to stay at the club following relegation from the Championship.

The Terriers are not the only club heading into the upcoming campaign with a new leader at the helm, with a number of changes at the League One side over the past two months.

We take a look at the other sides in the division who have recently made managerial appointments and will head into the season under new bosses.

Barnsley – Darrell Clarke

Clarke joined the Tykes from Cheltenham Town, who were relegated from League One last term.

The 46-year-old was brought in by the Robins in September after the club failed to record a win or score a goal in their first ten league games of the campaign. Cheltenham went on to collect 42 points from 36 games under Clarke but failed to get out of the last four.

The new Tykes boss has also previously managed Salisbury City, Bristol Rovers, Walsall and Port Vale, with five promotions under his belt during his managerial career to date.

Clarke joins a side that finished sixth in League One last term but suffered a 5-4 aggregate defeat to Bolton Wanderers in the play-off semi-finals. He replaces Neill Collins, who was fired before the final game of the regular season.

Burton Albion – Mark Robinson

The Brewers confirmed Robinson’s appointment as head coach on Tuesday, with the former AFC Wimbledon and Chelsea Under-21 boss taking the reins at the Pirelli Stadium.

Robinson came through the coaching ranks with the Dons to take charge of the first team in February 2021. He left the club just over a year later in March 2022, ending an 18-year spell with the Dons.

The boyhood Chelsea fan was appointed head coach of the Under-21s in May 2022, with Robinson guiding the Blues to back-to-back Premier League 2 finishes.

Robinson replaces former Terriers forward Martin Paterson, who left the Brewers at the end of May after his short-term contract expired. They finished fifth from bottom in League One last term as they avoided relegation on the final day of the campaign by two points.

Rotherham United – Steve Evans

A superb spell with Stevenage earned Evans a move to relegated Rotherham United in April, where he embarks on his second spell in charge of the Millers.

The 61-year-old has Leeds United, Peterborough United and Gillingham among his former clubs managed, with Evans set to join Stevenage in March 2022, with the club sitting 22nd in League Two at the time.

After guiding them to safety, Evans guided Stevenage to promotion before securing a ninth-place finish in League One last term, with the Scot leaving for Rotherham shortly before the end of the campaign.

The Millers finished comfortably bottom of the Championship last season, picking up just 27 points from 46 games. Since then, Evans has been proactive in preparing his squad for the new campaign, with seven signings already confirmed by the Millers.

Stevenage – Alex Revell

Revell was appointed as Evans’ successor last month, with the 40-year-old taking his second spell in charge at Stevenage.

He inherits a team that exceeded all expectations last season as they finished just five points off the League One play-offs in their first season following promotion from League Two.

Former Brighton & Hove Albion, Rotherham United and Cardiff City striker Revell ended his playing career at Stevenage and went on to be appointed manager of the club in February 2020. He was sacked in November 2021 but returned to the club in next January in a youth team coaching role.

The 40-year-old was promoted to the club’s first-team staff under Evans and took charge of the final two games of last season following the former boss’ departure to Rotherham, before his appointment was confirmed last month.
