There’s only one thing Leeds United should do with Rasmus Kristensen when he returns from loan this summer

After missing out on automatic promotion to Leicester City and Ipswich Town, Leeds will be looking to gain promotion via the play-offs for the first time in their history.

A return to the Premier League would undoubtedly make for a more interesting summer at Elland Road as there would be more focus on who could come in.

On the other hand, the 49ers have already admitted that sales of key players will have to be made if they are to fail in order to meet the PSR and make up some of the £190m owed in unpaid transfer fees.

There is only one decision Leeds have to make with Kristensen’s future

That said, Leeds’ recruitment team will have a big job on their hands regardless of what happens with the returning loanees.

Eight senior members of last season’s first-team squad left temporarily following relegation last month, but so far only Luis Sinisterra and Robin Koch have sealed permanent moves.

And one player who doesn’t look set to sign permanently for his loan club is Rasmus Kristensen, the right-back looks set to return to Elland Road from AS Roma.

Kristensen endured a poor season in the Italian capital, which began almost immediately after making the move, as the Denmark international was left out of the Europa League squad.

Although he started 18 Serie A matches, his performances were regularly criticized by the Italian media. Jose Mourinho – the manager – who signed him last summer, as he was sacked.

While Kristensen clearly has an uncertain future ahead of him, there is only one decision Leeds can make regarding him this summer and that is to sell him.

He proved he wasn’t good enough for the Premier League last season as he eventually lost his place to an aging Luke Ayling at right-back.

If Leeds stay in the Championship, he is the type of player who needs to be taken off the wage bill. His salary would not match the kind of results he could bring.

Fortunately, it would appear the club are aligned with the fans on what to do with all the returning loanees.

It was reported back in January that neither would be welcomed back, and this was only confirmed by what Daniel Farke said after Sinisterra’s move to Bournemouth.

The Leeds boss has dropped a major hint that he is not prepared to reinstate either of them back and hopefully he is true to his word, particularly in the case of Kristensen.

He said: “I’m always a bit careful when a player is here and wants to go, then bring him back – it’s like putting food in a microwave, it’s never as good as when it was freshly cooked. It’s beneficial for us.”
