Accidental shutdown of the Sky Blue Way as a pedestrian suffers life-changing injuries

A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after a pedestrian was hit by a car in Coventry. Police were called to Sky Blue Way yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, June 5).

Police rushed to the scene of the two-car crash, which happened near the junction with Lower Ford Street, at around 1pm. Firefighters from Coventry Fire Station also attended at around 1.10pm.



A 20-year-old man, who was a pedestrian, was struck by one of the vehicles and suffered life-changing injuries. He received treatment at the scene before being taken to Coventry University Hospital in Walsgrave.

A second man, who was the driver of one of the vehicles, was slightly injured. He was also taken to Coventry University Hospital.

Officers arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of dangerous driving, West Midlands Police said. He remains in custody this morning (Thursday June 6).

The Sky Blue Way was closed for several hours yesterday (June 5). Police remained at the scene throughout the evening as they investigated the collision, it is understood.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “We have arrested a man on suspicion of dangerous driving following a collision in Coventry. A 28-year-old man is in custody this morning (June 6) after being arrested in Sky Blue Way yesterday (June 5).

“Two cars were involved in a collision near the Lower Ford Street junction shortly after 1pm. A pedestrian was also struck by one of the vehicles. He was taken to Coventry University Hospital with potentially life-changing injuries. Inquiries remain ongoing.”

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: “Just before 1.10pm on Wednesday (June 5), two fire engines from Coventry Fire Station responded to Sky Blue Way. There was a collision between two cars and a pedestrian on the road.

“One driver extricated himself from his vehicle and received a precautionary check and the driver of the other car was helped from his vehicle by members of the public before receiving treatment from our crews. A pedestrian was treated for what were believed to be life-threatening injuries.

“Police also attended and the Sky Blue Way was closed while we worked at the scene. Crews left this incident at 2.16pm.”
