‘Nothing … to suggest any criminality’ in fatal child crash: Police

“We’re obviously dealing with a neighborhood, a family and a driver of a vehicle who were involved in a very traumatic incident,” says a Barrie police official.

Barrie police do not anticipate releasing any further information about the May 23 death of a 23-month-old boy.

“There is nothing at this point to suggest any criminality,” Barrie Police Communications Coordinator Peter Leon said of the tragedy.

Police were called to Red Maple Lane near Yonge Street and Mapleview Drive East on May 23 at 12:43 a.m. for an incident involving a toddler and a recycling collection truck. The boy later died in hospital after being airlifted to Toronto.

Emterra Environmental is the company that operates the truck involved in the collision.

Circular Materials has taken over recycling collection in Barrie starting May 1st. The organization contracts recycling collection in Barrie with Emterra.

“We’re obviously dealing with a neighborhood and a family and a driver of a vehicle that was involved in a very traumatic incident, not to mention the first responders there,” Leon said.

“Right now, from what I understand, people are still dealing with the tragic loss and will be for some time,” he added. “So we (the police) don’t have to revictimize people by putting anything further at this point, even if the investigation is over.”
