Police are investigating the shooting outside Jefferson County Family Court

The Birmingham Police Department is investigating after the Jefferson County Family Court building was shot at.

The shooting happened around 9 a.m. Thursday morning.

A woman inside was injured by broken glass from the gunfire, but no other injuries were reported. The woman is expected to be fine.

According to police, the preliminary investigation suggests that an unknown suspect(s) shot someone, possibly from the parking lot. Police believe the incident is isolated and not related to any court official or function.

Natasha Gray was inside the building when the incident occurred.

“The moment we heard the shooting, we tried to take cover,” Gray described that moment feeling scared and scared.

Gray also said it was unexpected, “not at a place of business like this, but these days shootings happen everywhere.”

Gray agrees that the situation could have been much worse, especially with the families and children who were in the building.

“A child could have been hit, an elderly person, anyone, it could have been me, any of us could have been hit,” she said.

Gray wants to see an end to the violence in Birmingham.

“I’m fed up, the whole community is fed up,” Gray said. “Children are killed by stray bullets, old people are killed by stray bullets, innocent bystanders are killed by stray bullets, it doesn’t make sense to me. They were.”

No one is in custody since this incident.
