McDonald’s plans for new drive-thru sign deemed ‘harmful’

Plans for a huge new sign at a McDonald’s in Warwickshire have been rejected. Bosses had hoped to install the double-sided sign outside the hugely popular branch in Queensway, Leamington Spa.

McDonald’s wanted to install the two-metre sign on a patch of grass next to the road on Europa Way. But Warwick District Council said the sign, which will be 4.8m wide, would be a “very dominant addition”.

Case officer Jack Lynch said the sign would also have had an “adverse effect on an existing feature which makes a significant contribution to the character of the local area”. He went on to describe the proposed signage as “harmful”, adding that it would be an “inappropriate addition”.

Officials said the new sign would not enhance the existing setting of the fast food restaurant and would be “detrimental to the character of the area”. Mr Lynch added that there was already a large amount of signage in place, meaning the new sign would amount to “harmful advertising clutter”.

Planners also objected to the proposed location, saying it would “infringe on an important feature of the otherwise largely unbroken amenity”. Mr Lynch said there was only “minor informational signage” at the moment.
