Speaking to the BBC, Mayor Papakalodoukas expressed doubts about Dr Mosley staying in the Pedi area, saying: “It’s a very small, controlled area full of people. So if something happened to him there, we would have found him by now. .”

Local police said late Thursday that the search had stopped for the night, but “more men will be coming” Friday morning.

Pedi, located in the north-east of the island, is a quiet fishing community nestled between rocky valleys along the coast, connected by roads to many of Symi’s larger towns and settlements.

A local employee at the Kamares Cafe on Pedi Beach, a hotspot for visitors, shared: “They came, the police, with the coast guard and the fire brigade, and the rescue team, to investigate, but I don’t think anything has been found yet .”
