Family tribute to young lover who died during Bristol Half Marathon

Tributes have been paid to a ‘beloved son’ and ‘incredible brother’ who died after suffering a cardiac arrest during the Bristol Half Marathon. Mike Harper, along with thousands of others, took part in the Great Run on Sunday 19 May, but tragically collapsed during the event. He was treated by doctors, but unfortunately he died at the hospital.

Mike’s family said they were “devastated” by his loss after the 26-year-old suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while jogging. He had no known health problems and always prioritized fitness, spending his time traveling, running and playing soccer. Mike also enjoyed hanging out with friends and exploring London with his girlfriend Ailsa.




A memorial fund has been set up online in Mike’s name to raise money for heart risk in young people. The charity works to raise awareness of sudden cardiac death in young people, support those affected, support CRY’s screening program and fund research and pathology.

His family said in a tribute: “We are devastated to say that we have lost Mike to sudden cardiac arrest while running the Bristol Half Marathon, a city he once called home. He had no known health problems or family history of sudden cardiac death at a young age. He was otherwise healthy and always prioritized fitness.”

“This loss has been so hard to imagine and CRY is providing such important support. Born in Lincoln, Mike moved to Bristol after graduating from Sheffield University for his job with Laing O’Rourke as a quantity surveyor at Hinckley Point. In 2023, he moved to London for his career, to work on the Olympia redevelopment.
