Sheffield tram stations close for track replacement work

No trams will stop in Sheffield city center during an 11-day track replacement project later this month.

During the works, scheduled to take place from 24 May to 3 June, no services will be able to operate between Fitzalan Square/Ponds Forge and the University.

Supertram said the multi-million pound project would “future-proof and extend the life of the network”.

A revised timetable and replacement transport will be in operation.

During the works, being carried out by the contractor VolkerRail, the Strada de Vest, City Hall, Cathedral, Castle Square and Fitzalan Square/Ponds Forge tram stations will not be served.

The station at Netherthorpe Road will also be closed while the tram shelters are replaced.

Supertram was returned to public control earlier this year after 27 years of private operation.

Melanie Corcoran, chief executive of transport at South Yorkshire’s Combined Mayor’s Authority, said the work was “vital” to extend the life of the Supertram network.

“By replacing the track, we are ensuring the region’s tram network can continue to safely provide the popular service for generations to come,” she said.

A fully revised timetable is available on the Travel South Yorkshire website.
