Manchester United legend to join Celtic

Celtic are expected to be busy in the upcoming summer transfer window and their biggest task will be finding a replacement for Joe Hart. The England goalkeeper proved many critics wrong during his three-year spell at Parkhead as he helped the club to seven trophies. However, he vacated the first-team gloves, retiring at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Celtic have been linked with a number of goalkeepers in recent times. Caoimhin Kelleher, Andriy Lunin, Ugurcan Cakir, Anthony Patterson and others have been suggested as potential options.

Another name was released recently. It is David De Gea’s. The Spaniard left Manchester United in the summer of 2023 and has been without a club since then.

It is remarkable that De Gea has not found a new club since leaving Manchester United. He kept the longest clean sheet in the Premier League even in his final season at Old Trafford. Could a move to Celtic be in the offing?

Many are questioning whether Celtic making a move for De Gea is even a realistic proposition given the wages he was on at Manchester United. Andy Walker seems to think so. As reported by the Daily Record, he said on The Go Radio Football Show:

“He’s still out of contract and the best thing about Celtic right now is that they can offer any player the Champions League.”

He went on to add about De Gea and Celtic:

“I know De Gea has made ridiculous amounts of money in his career, but maybe being out of contract will work for all parties. I wouldn’t rule out a big signing for Celtic – someone who has a name, like De Gea, who has a names that would excite people”.

Of course, signing De Gea would be seen as a major move by Celtic. But making such a high-profile move seems almost impossible at the moment. Never say never in football. Anything can happen.

It could be argued that De Gea no longer needs a significant package given the contract he had with Manchester United. He might be attracted to the idea of playing in front of the Celtic crowd, seeing how well Hart has been doing.
