Passengers heading to Birmingham Airport are being urged to ensure they adhere to the 100ml liquid rule to prevent further delays through security.

Restrictions on carrying liquids in hand luggage are being temporarily reinstated at some regional airports from Sunday.

However, the restriction has been in place at Birmingham Airport since March due to delays in regulatory approval of its new screening machines.

In recent weeks, long queues have formed outside the airport as passengers navigate the new security hall and construction work continues.

Nick Barton, Chief Executive Officer of Birmingham Airport said: “The rules we have been following since March are now very clear in that only liquids, pastes and gels up to 100ml can be carried in hand luggage.

“Since opening our new security area and despite being one of the first airports in the UK to comply, we have been limited in the use of our multi-million pound equipment due to an exceptional regulatory restriction , which means we had to limit liquids to 100ml. This rule has now been implemented nationwide.

“Although the 100ml rule is still in place, we constantly have non-compliant bags with liquids over the allowance, which has made our equipment inefficient and resulted in extended waiting times for customers.

“It is now imperative that all customers comply with the rule at national level to ensure a smoother and simpler transition through the airport. A non-compliant bag with liquids over 100ml can add up to 20 minutes to each passenger’s journey through security.

“All customers traveling should check their carry-on bags to ensure they comply with this restriction.”

As construction of the new security area is ongoing, the airport said the waiting area is mainly on the ground floor and urged passengers to arrive only 3 hours before their scheduled flight to avoid congestion.

What can I take in hand luggage?

Only liquids, pastes and gels up to 100 ml can be carried in hand luggage.

Any liquids that are larger must be in checked baggage.

Birmingham Airport said anything over 100ml would be removed and destroyed.
