Gunman hunted after man opens fire outside shop in ‘targeted attack’

Police are hunting a gunman who shot a man outside a shop in a ‘targeted attack’.

Officers were called at 9.37pm last night, Thursday, to reports that a man in his 30s had been shot outside the Go Local store on Scotland Road. The victim was taken to hospital where he is described as being in a serious but stable condition.

The offender was reported to be dressed in black clothing and left in the direction of Silvester Street.

A heavy police presence remains on Scotland Road, with the Silvester Street end cordoned off. Forensic officers could be seen examining the pavement outside the Go Local store and a bicycle propped up against a lamppost outside it.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Inspector James Halpin said: “We are in the early stages of the investigation as we try to establish why the incident happened and who was involved. Fortunately the man’s injuries are not life threatening and whilst I understand this is a shocking incident for the local community we believe this was a targeted attack.

“We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at around 9.30pm and witnessed the incident to contact Merseyside Police. Please check your CCTVs, dashcams or doorbell recordings and if you see anything suspicious please let us know. Any information you provide, however insignificant it may seem, could be vital to our investigation.”

Detective Inspector Halpin continued: “I would encourage anyone who knows about this incident or has information about firearms in their local community to come forward and tell us what they know. There is no place for guns on the streets of Merseyside and we will do everything in our power to make sure those responsible are brought to justice.”

If you have any CCTV, dashcam or buzzer footage or information about this incident please message DM Merseyside Police on Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook “Merseyside Police Contact Centre” with log 1047 of 9 May.
