The fire at the Cornwall Center was deliberate, the fire investigation is ongoing

A fire that caused “extensive damage” to the Bay of Cornwall Center was deliberate, Regina Fire and Protective Services (RFPS) say.

The fire was started in a clothes rack near one of the store’s exits.

“We are cooperating with Regina police on the investigation,” an RFPS spokesperson told CTV News.

Firefighters responded to the fire reported at 2:18 Wednesday afternoon. The resident witnessed several fire trucks on 11th Avenue just outside the south entrance to The Bay as crews worked.

Smoke could be seen inside the store through its exterior windows – while fire trucks were connected to hydrants outside.

No one was injured in the incident, however “extensive smoke and water damage” was reported on the main floor of the store.

“The fire was brought under control by both our crew that came in and the automatic sprinklers,” RFPS said.

Just after 5 p.m., the province announced that its eHealth headquarters, which is located in the same building as The Bay, would be closed to the public on Thursday.

“At this time, our health records and vital statistics counter service is closed and there will be a delay in responding to inquiries received through other channels,” it said.

The province said reopening updates will be shared through its website and social media.

In an update Thursday afternoon, Regina police confirmed they are conducting an investigation into the arson fire.

Residents are asked to contact Regina police or Crime Stoppers with any information that may assist the investigation.
