‘No surprise’ – Ange Postecoglou reacts to departure of key figure at the back – The Spurs Web

Ange Postecoglou has said he is not surprised a club of Birmingham City’s stature has come calling for Chris Davies after it was officially confirmed that Tottenham’s senior assistant manager will take over as manager of the Championship side.

Davies arrived at Hotspur Way last summer, shortly after Postecoglou took over as the club’s head coach, with the Welshman joining as the Australian’s senior assistant.

The 39-year-old, who previously worked as Brendan Rodger’s assistant at Liverpool, Celtic and Leicester City, has been working closely with the Spurs squad in the 2023-24 season.

However, he will not be at the north London club next season after it was announced by Birmingham City on Thursday that Davies will take over at St Andrew’s ahead of the new campaign.

The outgoing Spurs senior assistant manager appears to have been in demand for some time, having been heavily linked with the Swansea City job towards the end of last year (Evening Standard).

Postecoglou has now spoken highly of Davies and wished him well in his new venture in the Midlands.

Asked about his assistant’s takeover at Birmingham, the Tottenham head coach said (via Football.London): “Chris is an outstanding individual, he’s done a fantastic job with us over the last season and as I’ve said before, that will attract attention , so it’s no surprise to me that a club of Birmingham City’s stature have shown interest in him.

“I would like to thank Chris for all his hard work and wish him all the best.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given how in-demand Davies was, one suspects Postecoglou would have half-expected him to leave this summer.

So the Aussie manager would already have a few replacements in the back of his mind and we’d expect Tottenham to make an appointment quickly.

There is also the possibility that one of Mile Jedinak or Ryan Mason could now be promoted to fill Davies’ role.
