Official Liverpool FC Supporters’ Council Reacts To Tom Werner’s Controversial Plans – Liverpool FC

The club’s official supporters’ council has reacted to Liverpool chairman Tom Werner’s “idea” to play Premier League games in New York.

Werner angered many fans when he told them Financial times that he is “determined to one day play a Premier League game in New York City”.

Obviously this was not well received and the Liverpool Supporters’ Council, which is enshrined in the club’s Articles of Association, reacted by contacting the club to ask for assurances.

The supporters council said further X:

“On behalf of the Supporters Council, our chairman (Joe Blott) spoke directly to the club.

“They told us that Tom Werner’s comment was a personal idea, not LFC’s, which would only be discussed if it was appropriate for everyone, including and most importantly the supporters.

“It’s not something the club is considering. Even then, they assured us that it would be subject to consultation with our Supporters Council, in accordance with our Supporters Council agreement.

“Obviously the Supporters Council will be keeping a close eye on this matter.”

Fortunately, that appears to be the truth, and there’s no immediate danger of them acting on Werner’s idea, especially given that principal owner John Henry is “not particularly keen” on it.

Liverpool, who are pushing to play home games away from Anfield, will certainly come under the remit of the Supporters’ Council which was set up in 2022.

Blott, who is chairman of the board, said This is Anfield: “For any existential issues affecting the football club, so a ground quota, a ground move or a move to a separate league, cannot take place without the consent of the fans.”

While this is good news for supporters, it is still frustrating to know that Liverpool chairman Werner holds such views.

He told him Financial times: “Let’s find a way to give them very cheap travel (and) accommodation so that if Liverpool play Nottingham Forest, we can support the fans coming to New York.

“(Let’s) make it an attractive thing for the fans as well.”

How about getting the Anfield tickets affordable first before looking to fly us across the Atlantic?
