Barry Fry issues reminder to Birmingham City and says club ‘has never been in better hands’

Barry Fry reminded Birmingham City of what happened the last time they were relegated to League One – leading them to a league and cup double.

The Blues secured the league title and won the EFL Trophy – called the Auto Windscreens Shield at the time – at Wembley in front of 78,000 fans. Fry, now 79 but still involved in football as director of football at League One side Peterborough United, believes the Blues can do it again.

He said: “I know all you Bluenoses are down and out at the moment due to relegation. I have to remind you, when we were there and we got relegated to League 1, the next year we won the league. We also won the Auto Windscreens at Wembley in front of 78,000 people, 55,000 Bluenoses.

“You can do double next year. The club has never been in better hands than the new owners. They will take you back to the promised land of the Premier League.”

Fry remains a popular figure in these parts and will return to Birmingham on Friday night for BluesFest. Fry will join Christophe Dugarry at Millennium Point to enjoy stories from their Blues careers.

The pair will then go head-to-head on Saturday as managers of two teams at St Andrew’s in aid of the Birmingham City Foundation. You can buy tickets for the match here.
