Motorists have been warned to expect long delays after the multi-vehicle collision

A major incident has forced one of the busiest motorways to close after several vehicles collided early this morning.

The accident along the M6 ​​affected junction three and junction two near Coventry, with the southbound lanes closed causing delays of at least an hour for motorists.


Emergency services, including the air ambulance, have been called to the scene, while the response is being led by Warwickshire Police.

The northbound lanes have been opened but motorists are being warned to expect delays and congestion while the incident is dealt with.

National Highways has implemented diversions to help drivers minimize the impact of road closures.

Motorists are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on the road signs and exit at Junction Three and take the fourth exit from the roundabout onto the A444 towards Coventry.

From here, drivers should keep left on the approach to the roundabout and take the dedicated lane onto the A428 Binley Road eastbound.

It should follow the A428 Binley Road eastwards to the junction with the A46.

At the roundabout drivers must take the first exit onto the A46 Coventry Eastern Bypass.

From there they should head north on the A46 and keep left to avoid joining the M69 until they reach junction two of the M6.

At the junction roundabout take the fourth exit to join the M6 ​​southbound.

Earlier this week, three of the four lanes of the M6 ​​northbound between J18 Holmes Chapel and J19 Tabley in Cheshire were forced to close after a major incident was reported.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said at the time: “Emergency services are at the scene of a road traffic collision involving five HGVs on lanes 1-3 of the M6 ​​northbound between J18 and J19.

Cheshire Police reported that one person is believed to have suffered “serious injuries”.
