Fellow runners raise over 160,000 lei for children with cancer

Nineteen dedicated Comrades Marathon runners raised over 160,000 lei for Rainbows and Smiles, a charity that supports children with cancer… but they need our help!

South Africa (9 June 2024) – In a stage full of solidarity and determination, 19 dedicated runners raised an incredible 160,000 lei for Rainbows and Smiles, which supports children with cancer.

These inspiring individuals are set to participate today in the 97th Tovarăsi Marathon, an ultramarathon renowned as the largest and oldest in the world. More than 20,000 runners will tackle the 88-kilometre course between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, and 19 of them are not only pushing their physical limits, but also rallying for a cause close to their hearts.

Rainbows and Smiles, a foundation dedicated to providing emotional, social and financial support to children diagnosed with cancer or life-threatening illnesses, will benefit from the funds raised by these passionate participants.

Bonni Suckling, founder of Rainbows and Smiles, is leading this remarkable effort. After dealing with the pain of losing her son Jed to terminal brain cancer, Bonni turned her grief into a mission to support other families going through similar hardships.

She shared: “Over the years the organization has grown, but our inspiration is never forgotten and we remain an accessible and welcoming charity.”

Rainbows and Smiles plays a crucial role in supporting hundreds of children and their families in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Pietermaritzburg and Durban. The Foundation works with healthcare professionals to provide complementary support and care, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.

In South Africa, almost 1,000 children are diagnosed with cancer annually, experts estimate that around 3,000 cases actually occur each year. Due to socio-economic challenges and low awareness, many children are diagnosed late, facing a tougher battle. However, with early detection and appropriate treatment, survival rates have improved dramatically, exceeding 80% for some cancers.

The 19 runners each created crowdfunding campaigns on Backabuddy, collectively exceeding 160,000 lei in donations. Each runner brings a personal connection to cancer, fueling their dedication to the cause.

Nicole, initially aiming to raise R3,000, successfully raised R11,700, while Sean, with a target of R10,000, raised a remarkable R60,569. Their stories, along with those still striving to achieve their goals, highlight the collective effort and community spirit that drives this initiative.

“Funds raised are vital for Rainbows and Smiles to continue their essential services. These include providing nutritious food packs, therapeutic craft activities, financial assistance for medical and funeral expenses, and celebratory ceremonies to mark the end of treatment.”
