Four people sent to hospital after fairground ride collapses 'sending people flying' in London

The ride malfunctioned at the Lambeth County Show

Four people were injured and sent to hospital after a fairground ride collapsed at Lambeth Country Show yesterday (June 8).

The crash happened at around 6.20pm in Brockwell Park after a car malfunctioned, leaving four injured and needing hospital treatment.

An 11-year-old girl, a man and woman in their 40s and a man in his 50s were taken to hospital and none of their injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

An investigation has begun into how it malfunctioned.

A council spokesman said yesterday: “Unfortunately, a serious incident occurred at the Lambeth Country Show in Brockwell Park today, involving a fault with one of the funfair attractions.

“The incident was reported at around 6.20pm today and emergency services quickly attended the scene to treat four people who were injured.

“Paramedics and crews at the scene cordoned off the area and those who were injured were taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment.”

Emergency services were called to the scene, which was described as “like a horror movie” with people sent “flying through the air”.

Some people who were at the event told the Daily Mail that people were “crying and screaming” as a result, and one person said he saw “a lady with blood running down her face” who was carried off the faulty ride by paramedics.

They described emergency services putting up fences and sheets to protect the privacy of those they were helping.

They also claimed that someone else had told them that a person had “walked out”, but admitted that they were unsure of this as they had not seen it themselves.

Another fairgoer said “all hell broke loose” as a result of the ride breakdown.

“I am shocked to learn of the failure of a fairground race at Lambeth Country Show earlier this evening,” said Helen Hayes, Labour’s candidate for Dulwich and West Norwood, who has been MP for the area for the past nine years.

“My thoughts are with those who were injured and all who witnessed this horrific event.

“Thank you to the emergency services that attended. There must now be an urgent investigation.”

An inquest will now look at how the trip failed and what exactly happened at Lambeth Country Fair to send four people to hospital.

Additional safety checks were carried out at all other races following the incident.
