Overnight fire causes “significant damage” to house near Bond Head

Garage fire spreads into main structure of residence; all occupants escaped due to working smoke detectors, the deputy fire chief says

A garage fire that broke out early Sunday morning caused extensive damage to a home on the west side of Bradford West Gwillimbury.

At around midnight, crews from Bradford Fire and Emergency Services were called to a report of a garage fire on Cassells Drive, near Bond Head. Once on the scene, they found the fire had spread into the main structure, causing “significant damage,” Deputy Chief Steve Hall said. Bradford Today.

“All passengers were able to escape safely due to working smoke detectors,” he said by email on Sunday. “We’re just cleaning up a few hot spots this morning and should be cleaning up soon.”

Witnesses said the house had recently been renovated.

Another witness said Bradford Today they could hear an explosion from their home more than a kilometer away.

New fire departments from Tecumseth and Innisfil were called in to provide mutual aid and tanker service, and portable tanks were set up to maintain a steady flow of water during the incident.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
