Bristol Airport’s short-term car park was most recently gutted in a £60m deal

Bristol Airport’s short stay car park has moved as part of a project to create a public transport interchange and additional multi-storey car park. The scheme, which includes investment of more than £60m, is the largest single investment since the terminal opened in 2000, I saw that the work started last September which is scheduled to last 18 months.

The short-stay car park was demolished for the new public transport interchange, according to eyewitnesses. The short-stay space, which used to be in front of the terminal building, has moved behind the pre-existing multi-storey car park.

The new interchange will be located on the upper level of the multi-storey car park and will provide 10 new spaces for coaches and buses. This would more than double the existing number of bays (six) and mean the airport would have one of the largest bus/coach interchanges in the South West region.

The upper level of the multi-storey will also offer a dedicated drop-off and pick-up location. In addition to the interchange, the internal road system will be improved by separating pedestrians and vehicles to make it safer.

The new multi-storey car park will offer more than 2000 spaces with waiting rooms and rest areas. It will adjoin the existing multi-storey car park.

Pedestrians will be able to access the terminal using a glazed bridge link with easy access for customers. As a result, the current pedestrian route, which uses steps and slopes between the car parks and the terminal, will be removed.

Bristol Airport CEO Dave Lees said in September: “This project is transformative for our customers. It is the largest capital investment project since the terminal opened in 2000 and will take 18 months to complete.

“As with all major projects, these are complex and development work will need to be phased in to accommodate normal daily airport operations. During the course of the project, customers will see some temporary changes taking place, including the temporary relocation of some car parks and changes to internal road layouts. We will continue to keep customers informed of the changes through directional signage, customer parking booking messages, the website and social media.”

The project is part of plans to make Bristol Airport able to handle 12 million passengers a year and will create thousands of new jobs in the coming years. The project “is the first of many” to improve the customer experience at Bristol Airport, while the shuttle will be a net zero airport by 2030.
