Police have praised the 20,000 bikers who descended on Hairy Biker Dave Myers’ hometown to enjoy a “no-fuss” tribute day.

The TV chef died in February aged 66 after being diagnosed with cancer.

Cumbria Police said no arrests were made on Saturday at the event dubbed ‘Dave’s Day’.

“We were all in tears, not a dry eye,” he added, to huge cheers.

Myers’ widow Lili said: ‘Dave was always a Barrovian at heart. He loved Barrow and wanted to put Barrow on the map.

— And today, beyond the grave, he did it again.

Sup. Andy Wilkinson, from Cumbria Police, said: “There was a great turnout at the motorcycle procession yesterday, both from the bikers heading to Barrow and the locals who turned out to support them.

“We estimate around 20,000 motorcyclists took part and I am pleased to say there were no major incidents on the road network.

“A great deal of planning took place before yesterday to ensure the safety of all involved.

“I would like to thank them all for their safe conduct and working with ourselves and our partner agencies.”

Wendy Gunning, who runs a woolen shop in the town’s inner square, crocheted pies in the chef’s honor to sell for charity.

She said: “Dave was a customer for years and I met his family. He has always supported local businesses.

“His favorite food was Green’s Pies so I decided to crochet pies while my husband Stephen, a biker, joined the trip to Burton-in-Kendal.”

She said she struggled to keep up with demand and sold more than 100 items, raising more than £500 for the charity.

“All the profits go to his charities. He was such a lovely guy and I wanted to get involved with Dave Day,” Ms Gunning added.

“It was fantastic how many people came together to remember Dave Myers.”
