Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe has made it abundantly clear that the club will not be heading into the first month of next season with “one hand tied behind their backs” like last season.

Leeds and Daniel Farke would no doubt have preferred to be in the Premier League after just one season in the EFL, but that is not the case.

The 49ers, led by chairman Paraag Marathe, are now tasked with ensuring Leeds are able to go one better this time and finish in the top two.

What did Paraag Marathe say about summer plans?

As for what Leeds will look like this summer, there is total optimism from chairman Marathe after what he inherited 12 months ago from Andrea Radrizzani.

Leeds fans will need no reminding of what unfolded last summer and it manifested itself in a slow start to the season which saw seven points dropped in the first three games – and the Whites finished six adrift of top two in the end, a fairly significant stuttering start.

However, Marathe is pleased that this will not be the case in 24/25, as he said (via YEP):

“That’s probably the most interesting thing this season is that I played, I mean, what do you guys think, the first month of the season with one hand tied behind my back, because of some player disadvantages, some players had” n- I’m still in.

“With some players we had contractual problems and so we started our season with one hand tied behind our backs. However, I finished with 90 points.

“I mean, on the Daniel question, for me earlier, a 90-point season is tremendous. When was the last time that team had at least that many points and didn’t get promoted? You know it’s been over 20 years since that happened and to do what we did, despite the way the first month of the season went, I’m excited that this season we can come out completely competitive from the first . match of the season, by 46.

“I’m really excited to see what we can do. I’m excited about the fact that we have a busy offseason. Like I said, five more weeks to start planning our strategy for players and teams. It just gives us a head start on ourselves and what we’ve had before, and that’s why I have the same concurrent feelings of feeling hurt and sad, but also excited about the future.”

Will Leeds be promoted next season?

Paraag Marathe fires Leeds United’s pre-season warning to the rest of the EFL

Angus Kinnear’s Amazon documentary commentary on the 2019 play-off game came in a stern, focused manner that showed Leeds were not to be beaten heading into 19/20 – and they went on to the title that year .

Marathe, here, echoes the same tone, pointing out that the same pitfalls that beset the club from the start simply no longer exist.

And he’s right, Leeds have had until September to get their squad in order, having to clear loan clauses before the start of the season, with no clarity on signings to pull the trigger on that front.

This time Leeds have resolved that uncertainty and can look at their squad much more closely to have plans in place for a full pre-season.

WhoScored.com has Leeds’ most-used XI of the 23/24 season, and six of that squad were either not here for matchday one or were not fit to play – Joe Rodon, Junior Firpo, Ilia Gruev, Glen Kamara, Georginio Rutter and Patrick Bamford.

Give Farke a full pre-season with 95% of the squad for the season and it could be Leeds this time that have a big advantage over their rivals, with managerial changes coming in left and right at the moment.
