Large 999 response to ‘several small fires’ at derelict golf club

Fire crews rushed to reports of “several small fires” at a former golf club in North Warwickshire. Engines from Atherstone and also nearby Nuneaton station were called to a derelict building fire at Old Purley Chase Golf Club.

Atherstone Fire Station reported they had to extend the hose reel three times its normal length to reach the property on Sunday evening (June 9). This was so they could put out “several small fires” on the ground floor and first floor.

The derelict building has been targeted by vandals in the past and pictures from inside show graffiti scrawled on many of the walls. This prompted fire crews to issue an urgent appeal to the community to “never enter abandoned or unsafe buildings”.

They say it puts themselves and fire crews at risk from falling debris, asbestos, unstable floors, sharp objects and illness from animal feces and urine.
