Teachers scolded by police for going wrong on field trip

Police and firefighters were called after someone reported seeing a person lift a manhole cover and climb inside

Guelph police say two Guelph teachers received a “clearance” after a field trip drew an emergency response Thursday morning.

At approximately 11:20 a.m., police were called to the area of Yorkshire Street North and Elora Street after two witnesses reported seeing someone lift a manhole cover and climb inside before closing the cover.

Police and firemen intervened. As firefighters prepared to enter the sewer system with rescue equipment, police were approached by two teachers from a nearby high school. The teachers said they were on a class field trip to explore the stormwater management system when one of the students climbed into the drain and opened and then closed the dormer lid.

Teachers were advised of the potential safety and liability issues of such a field trip.
