The Pale: Diary of the Dead is the innovative debut novel of local author J. McDonald.

Using a unique first-person literary style that leaves the gender of the narrator up to the reader, this author’s works focus on the value of the inside versus the outside.

“It wasn’t the first time I’d been cornered somewhere, left battered and bleeding, but the ghostly copy of me was the first disturbing one.”

Through the eyes of the jaded narrator, Alex, readers are invited to explore the world of the recently deceased.

Alex must stop a serial killer before time runs out in the Pale. With the help of a selfless 12-year-old and an amateur detective, Alex fights not only the monster that stalks the streets, but also the demons within.

Full of unique building that offers something new to the genre, The Pale is a page turner for fans of fantasy and paranormal suspense.

Pale, and shorter pieces in a similar style by J. McDonald, are the culmination of a deep dive into the genre while studying for an MA in Novel Writing.

J. McDonald was recently a panelist for the ‘Publishing and Diversity’ session at the North London Story Festival, hosted by Middlesex University in the UK
