Chris Davies explains the philosophy he will implement at Birmingham City

A team coached by Chris Davies is “not passive in any way”, according to the new Birmingham City manager. The newly appointed Blues boss is hoping to create an entertaining, possession-based side that can achieve the club’s goal of promotion from League One at the first attempt.

Davies checked in at the Blues’ training base in Henley-in-Arden on Monday morning after signing a four-year deal to take his first steps in management at St Andrew’s. The 39-year-old leaves Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent a year as Ange Postecoglou’s assistant, after 13 years on Brendan Rodgers’ coaching staff at Swansea, Liverpool, Celtic and Leicester City.

By now we are all aware that Davies is aligned with Blues owners Knighthead on how football should be played. All the teams he coached tried to play with style and fancy and most importantly with the ball.

Explaining his philosophy, Davies said: “For me it’s a high-energy, high-intensity style of football. We want to be very proactive in the way we play, not passive in any way. I want the team to attack and try to be dominant.

“Playing with energy and relentlessness is very difficult for the opposition and that’s the team we’ll try to work to create here. The number one rule for all the best teams is to be the hardest working team. We want to play with intensity, energy and physicality.”

Davies doesn’t want the Blues to have possession for its own sake, however, he wants them to play with attacking intent. He added: “It’s about efficient football. It is not about football for any aesthetic purpose.
