The Manchester United star will not travel with the international squad due to injury problems, his season finally over

Manchester United could be relieved to learn of a smart decision made on a key player by their international manager.

Accidents at international tournaments are unfortunate. Accidents in international friendlies are much harder to bear.

Manchester United centre-back Jonny Evans is no longer a risk. Northern Ireland made the decision to excuse him from the final international game of the season.

The Northern Ireland FA have confirmed that the veteran defender will be given a well-deserved break.

Latest Jonny Evans

Jonny Evans played in Northern Ireland’s recent 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Euro 2024 qualifier Spain.

This was his first match since the FA Cup Final, where he helped Manchester United close out the match against City to win 2–1.

Northern Ireland are due to play Andorra in another friendly, but Jonny Evans did not travel with the squad.

The Northern Ireland FA said it would have been “unrealistic” to expect Evans to play another game so soon after such a difficult season with injury problems.

According to the press release: “Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill said Evans had some injury troubles during the regular season and felt it was unrealistic to expect him to play another game after being on pitch over 90 minutes against Spain in Palma on Saturday.”

Evans flew home from Northern Ireland’s base in Spain instead of flying to Andorra with the rest of the squad, his 2023/24 season now over.

Jonny Evans games played in 2023/24

Jonny Evans has had a very busy 2023/24, playing games at the highest level, asked to do more for Manchester United than anyone imagined when he started training with the team last summer.

Evans, now 36, was offered a deal on deadline day after impressing manager Erik ten Hag in pre-season.

An injury crisis saw Evans play a busy role and his international games added to the demands.

Evans played 30 games for Manchester United in 2023/24 and also played a further five games for Northern Ireland.

Injury problems saw him miss time and he rushed to help United at the end of the campaign. He is now taking a well-deserved rest before deciding what his future holds.
