Queues at Birmingham Airport live as passengers face ‘two hour’ wait to get into terminal

Travelers are facing long delays of “two hours”, according to passengers, as queuing “chaos” continues at Birmingham Airport this morning. In a repeat of scenes from the past month, frustrated passengers are messaging bosses via social media platforms in a bid to get answers.

Some report long waits of around two hours before even getting inside the terminal and reaching the security gates. Karen Harper posted on X: “Absolute chaos at @bhx_official. Queues stretching the length of the building with up to two hour waits in the freezing cold.

“How on earth can this be justified by the leaders of Birmingham Airport?” @j_sxngh posted: “@easyJet bag in drop opens 2 hours before flight departure. @bhx_official Current wait time for security 2 hours. Make this meaningful.”

As the airport launches its “state-of-the-art” security hall upgrade, customers face new rules on liquids while new scanning equipment awaits regulatory approval. By then, there were consistent reports from anxious travelers of long queues before 9am.

Airport bosses are urging passengers to check and follow the new rules on liquids, which say liquids can remain in hand bags rather than clear plastic bags, but must not exceed 100ml containers.

While the rules on liquids have been relaxed a bit, there are still rules in place. And BHX bosses say people who don’t follow the rules are slowing down queues.

To help passengers, the airport has created a video guide that you can see below.

Not everyone experiences long queues

Some passengers have spoken of their easier passage through BHX. Those traveling outside the morning rush hour seem to find it easier and those with a fast pass. But I heard that these passes are limited in number and some were unable to buy them

Liquid rules explainer

The airport told Birmingham Live that despite investing £60m in their new security hall, they are unable to make the most of it. In the meantime, here’s their explanation of liquid transport.

Patience exhausted with the explanation given by the airport on liquids

Birmingham Airport bosses responded that 18% of bags passing through security at Birmingham Airport failed to comply on Monday morning as chaos and confusion reigned in the Midlands travel hub.

They also refuted the claim that there was a 2.5 hour wait, saying instead that their maximum queue time was 70 minutes. However, there have been repeated scenes of long queues at BHX in Solihull as bosses wait for liquid hand luggage rules to change.

Anxious travelers have reported for weeks being forced to queue outside the terminal at peak times. Many called for an urgent rethink to get the terminal in order before the anticipated rush of summer holidays.

A look at Tuesday’s queues from 4.30

Wrapped up against the cold and huddled together, a long line of tourists waits to enter the terminal. Many had read about the chaos they were facing, so they showed up hours early to prepare, but to no avail.

This was posted on X by Dave Fritton showing the situation at 4.30am.
