The 10 cheapest places where tourists can rent cars in all of Europe

When traveling abroad, renting a car can add an extra cost to any trip. And depending on where you go, it can be a big difference to the daily cost.

Researchers looked to see where you can get the best deals on car hire – and found the 10 lowest average costs for European destinations. The lowest cost was Malta, costing an average of £20.68 per day.

Portugal’s Faro, which will set travelers back £22.82 a day, and Turkey’s Antalya, at £23.11, come second and third respectively. Rounding out the top five are Paphos in Cyprus at £24.30 a day and Seville in southern Spain at just £25.39.

The figures were compiled by Skyscanner using data from its car hire service in a range of European and worldwide destinations. Laura Lindsay, Skyscanner travel trends and destinations expert, said: “Hiring a car allows you to get out and enjoy parts of your trip that you might otherwise miss.

“From stunning coastal scenery to the proximity and personality of a city, there are so many benefits to getting behind the wheel and exploring. Renting a car can be an extremely affordable way to get around on vacation if travelers know the tips and tricks for shopping and comparing their options.”

Despite many price increases over the past year, car rental costs have decreased in some places. Albania saw the biggest year-on-year price reduction, falling by 34%. Italy also saw its rental car rates drop 26% lower than last year, while France fell 16% and Austria 15%.

The figures come after research found 12% booked the vehicle the day before or on the day of travel. However, Skyscanner data shows that those looking to hire a car in Spain or Italy should do so a week before they travel – while those going to France should book their car hire two weeks in advance ahead to get the best price.

A Skyscanner spokesperson added: “While it can be daunting to drive on the opposite side of the road or deal with foreign road signs, people soon get used to it and enjoy the experience. No need to wait ages for unreliable public transport – get behind the wheel and enjoy the holiday you want, where you want.”
