New ‘bonus’ figures emerge for record transfer to Coventry City, which could see fee rise to €11m

Details have emerged of how Haji Wright’s former club Antalyaspor will continue to benefit from their deal when they sold the US international to Coventry City last summer.

A Turkish publication claim that a number of clauses were agreed when the 26-year-old joined the Sky Blues for a club-record fee of £7.7m last August on the eve of the new Championship campaign. The report says Antalyaspor will earn a further €2m (nearly £1.7m) if Mark Robins’ men are promoted to the Premier League, although that clause, according to the article, is only active for two seasons, meaning the Turkish club will be desperate for Coventry to win promotion next term after failing to make the play-offs last time out.

The report from antalyam.com also states that Wright’s former club have a 20 per cent sell-on clause for any profit made on the player, should he be sold by the Sky Blues.

The report says: “While Antalyaspor have broken their club record and sold Haji Wright, who they signed from Sönderjyske to English Championship side Coventry City, they have also invested in the future with clauses included in the contract. The Reds, who put €9m (£7.7m) into their coffers from the sale of the American striker, have added clauses such as a share of the next sale and a bonus if they buy a Premier League ticket.

It adds: “While Coventry City could not reach their Premier League target in Haji Wright’s first season in charge, Antalyaspor have not given up hope of the bonus. It has been learned that the Reds and Whites have signed a two-year contract and if Coventry City are promoted to the Premier League in the 2024-25 season, the bonus clause will be activated. Consequently, if Coventry gets the opportunity in the Premier League next season, Antalyaspor will be the owner of €2 million.”

Regarding the sell-on clause, the report states: “Antalyaspor also have a stake in the further sale of Haji Wright. According to the agreement, if the English team sells Haji Wright, Antalyaspor will receive a 20 percent share.”
