Cornwall has been crowned the UK’s favorite place to stay in 2024, beating Yorkshire

A nationwide survey has revealed the UK’s favorite holiday destinations, with Cornwall coming out on top for its beautiful beaches, picturesque villages and stunning scenery.

A survey of 2,000 adults has revealed the UK’s favorite holiday spots, with the South West hotspot taking the top spot thanks to its stunning beaches, picturesque villages and stunning scenery.

Other popular destinations for 2024 include the Scottish Highlands, Devon and Yorkshire. North Wales, Cumbria and the Isle of Wight also topped the list of places Britons are keen to visit.



The research, carried out by Sykes Holiday Cottages as part of its annual Staycation Index, found that 77% of Britons will take at least one holiday in the UK this year. In addition, the holiday rental company found that the average Briton will take three breaks in the UK in 2024.

Interestingly, more than four in ten (42%) are planning a holiday for their main holiday rather than going abroad. The agency’s index highlighted a trend towards shorter and more frequent getaways contributing to this growth, with short break bookings up 44%.

This is supported by research from OnePoll.com, which showed that 35% of people prefer these shorter breaks to fewer and longer vacations. The main reasons for choosing shorter breaks include experiencing more locations, enjoying regular escapes and fitting in with a busy schedule.

When it comes to the preferred type of accommodation, cottage-style holiday homes are the most popular choice, overtaking luxury hotels as the top choice last year. Interestingly, 54% of people will book a holiday based solely on accommodation rather than location.

The convenience of traveling to the UK is the main reason (43%) for choosing a holiday over a trip abroad. Exactly one third find it less stressful and 32% are influenced by the cheaper costs compared to traveling abroad.

For those taking a major holiday to the UK this year, they are expected to spend an average of £1,070 in total – including travel, accommodation, food and spending money.

Coastal and countryside walks are UK travelers’ favorite holiday activities, along with exploring local attractions and enjoying pub lunches, according to the data. In addition to visiting more well-known areas, 36% plan to travel to locations off the usual tourist trail.

Somerset, Argyll and Bute and Kent are among the less visited places where those surveyed would like to venture. It was also revealed that 65% are satisfied with discovering hidden destinations or attractions.
