The Cannon Hill Park investigation was launched after cars flooded the beauty spot

West Midlands Police have confirmed they will speak to the landowner in the area involved in the Cannon Hill Park car park chaos earlier this week. Dozens of cars were pictured parked in the pedestrian area of Cannon Hill Park on Bank Holiday Monday after it was understood an access gate had been left open.

The force said they believe the area involved with the gate is private land and are looking to work with the landowner for access and parking. Birmingham City Council also said it was investigating and would “seek to remedy” the problem – which residents worry will happen repeatedly over the summer.

Shocking images shared with BirminghamLive showed cars thrown between old plants and trees, a Range Rover parked across the pavement and double yellow lines and vehicles filling green areas intended for families and dog walkers.

A resident who lives opposite the park and watched the chaos unfold told BirminghamLive: “By the time the (enforcement) officers turn up, it’s way too late. There’s a pretty nasty attitude around any kind of enforcement.”

When asked what the atmosphere was like, he replied: “Raised anger, (there was a) minority of really unpleasant people. I have to witness chaos every day. It has happened before, it happened last year on hot days. The gates are normally closed.

Coun Majid Mahmood, Birmingham’s head of environment, said earlier this week: “We are looking at how the gates have been left open because a number of people have access to the park and how we can fix this problem in the future. We remind drivers that the emergency access gates are just that and should not be used to access the park, even if they are open, and should use the car park instead.”

West Midlands Police told BirminghamLive on May 8: “Local officers attended Cannon Hill Park on Monday 6 May following calls regarding parking and traffic issues.
