Murder suspect named after man killed in alleged attack in Old Trafford park

A man has been charged with murder after a man died following an alleged attack in an Old Trafford park.

Headley Barry Thomas, known as Barry, was found unconscious with serious head injuries next to a bench in Penn Park, near Maher Gardens, on September 12, 2022. On October 2 of the same year, the 51-year-old tragically died because of his injuries. .



Greater Manchester Police have launched a murder investigation and launched a number of appeals for help to trace the person responsible for the alleged attack. They said Barry’s family members were “desperate for answers”.

Joshua Carroll has now been charged with his murder, a GMP spokesman confirmed in a statement today (June 11). The 29-year-old, of no fixed abode, is due to appear at the Mancehster Court today.

The force’s statement said: “Charges have been laid following the murder of Headley ‘Barry’ Thomas in 2022. Joshua Carroll (06/05/1995) of no fixed abode has been charged with murder.

“At approximately 2.30pm on Monday 12 September 2022, Barry Thomas was found unresponsive in Penn Park, Old Trafford. Barry, 51, was taken to hospital but sadly died from his injuries on Sunday 2 October 2022.

“A murder investigation was launched, which included a park-wide appeal eight weeks after the attack, where he was found near a park bench. Joshua Carroll will appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court later today.”
