The police watchdog has released more details of the fatal Stanningley standoff as the fired gun was found at the scene

The police watchdog issued a statement after a man died following a confrontation with West Yorkshire Police in Stanningley.

On Sunday June 9, West Yorkshire Police were called at 12.35pm to a house in Half Mile Green, Stanningley. It was described as a “domestic incident” involving a man held inside at gunpoint. Armed police surrounded the building and a tense standoff ensued that lasted several hours.




Negotiators tried to talk to the man outside the house throughout the day, but the standoff continued into the evening. Just before 11 p.m., the police entered the house where they found a seriously injured man.

They started CPR and he was rushed to hospital, but died Monday morning. The force then turned to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is the procedure.

Now the IOPC has confirmed it is investigating. An inspector was at the scene and is gathering evidence.

The IOPC confirmed that a fired non-police weapon was found at the scene. It also confirmed that police used CS gas at the tense scene, as well as a “distraction device” that set off a series of loud bangs when police entered.
