Erik ten Hag is set to take a back seat with Manchester United’s recruitment

Manchester United’s end-of-season review has finally come to an end and it has been decided that Erik ten Hag will remain as manager.

News broke late on Tuesday night that the Ten Hag will remain at Old Trafford, with the Dutchman set to earn a contract extension despite recent fears he will be sacked following a turbulent 2023/24 season.

Ten Hag’s current deal expires at the end of next season, with the club having the option to trigger a 12-month extension.

Ten Hag’s FA Cup triumph and the team’s injury problems are understood to have been major factors in the decision, although Ineos were also pleased with the way the manager handled a difficult period.

United and Ten Hag are said to have aligned following the club’s season review, a process which took more than two weeks and saw other managers being scouted for the role.

None of the candidates sounded more suited to the role than Ten Hag.

However, Ineos will make changes to the agreement that United made with Ten Hag.

Independent journalist Peter Hall claims the Dutchman will take a back seat when it comes to recruitment. This could be a way to stop SEG (Ten Hag’s agent) pulling United’s strings in the transfer market.

The Ten Hag have come under fire for a number of signings since becoming manager, with Antony looking like one of the club’s most expensive flops. That said, Ten Hag also signed Lisandro Martinez and Rasmus Hojlund.

United’s league form must improve next season and the aim must be to return to the Champions League.

After finishing eighth in the Premier League last season, it shouldn’t be hard to do better next season – but it has to be much better.

At least Ten Hag have a chance to show what they are more capable of under the new implementation of the sporting structure after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos took over football operations.
