Vincent Kompany is immediately targeting the Liverpool star just days after the Bayern Munich job

Liverpool’s new transfer structure could be set for its first major test, with Bayern Munich keen on a move for Joe Gomez. All eyes will be on Anfield’s response.

Gomez is Liverpool’s longest-serving senior player. The only one to precede Jurgen Klopp, that also means he arrived before Michael Edwards’ time as sporting director. The transfer guru is now back with FSG in a ‘head of football’ position and will no doubt play a role in deciding the defender’s future alongside head coach Arne Slot and new sporting director Richard Hughes.

According to the Mirror report, Vincent Kompany is fueling interest in Gomez. A former defender himself, he identified the Liverpool star as an ideal option, partly because of his versatility in the back line.

Liverpool have also benefited from this in the season just gone, with Gomez playing at left-back, right-back and centre-back, even getting a few outings in midfield. This latest experiment was somewhat questionable, but it underscores the 27-year-old’s sheer adaptability.

The same trait earned him a long-awaited England recall. While away with Gareth Southgate’s side in 2020, Gomez suffered a major setback, suffering an injury that kept him out for months, shortly after playing a crucial role in Liverpool’s imperious title-winning season . The national manager has now limited him for the first time since, assessing the flexibility he brings to the squad as they head towards Euro 2024.

It appears that Edwards and Liverpool would agree not to entertain offers for Gomez. The club “will issue a firm suspension warning” with the defender seen as “a hugely important player” as Slot begins his tenure.
